OSC - optical supervisory channel. We do not prefer a non-linear frequency dependence of phase response in a WDM system architecture. The advantage of an all pole system is if we know the magnitude response we can uniquely identify its phase response. IIR systems have dispersion and non-linear phase response. In an FIR one can get a dispersion free filter (by adding positive and negative(of what?)). Think of an optical isolator as an equivalent to a by-pass capacitor in electrical circuits. Gradient Index (GRIN) lenses - 0.3 dB reflection loss, 0.3-1.5 dB insertion loss.
