"If I have been of service, if I have glimpsed more of the nature and essence of ultimate good, if I am inspired to reach wider horizons of thought and action, if I am at peace with myself, it has been a successful day." Alex Noble

Community Service Summary

Goleta Valley Community Center

Professor parhami has served the broader community in a variety of ways over the past four decades. Early in his academic career, he gave numerous public lectures to diverse audiences and also participated in the discussion of science and technology issues through mass media. For example, he authored or translated a large number of columns and articles on computers and computing for the popular press. More recently, he has developed a special series of mathematics lessons that aim to present challenging topics to elementary-school students by means of simple puzzles and fun games. This series of lessons, organized under the title "Math + Fun!", were tested at the Goleta Family School during 2003-06 and have since been made available as slide shows for free on-line access by teachers and students. A pet peeve of Professor Parhami is the utter lack of concern for the safety of UCSB students and staff exhibited by those who drive motor vehicles or ride bicycles on the campus walkways. In 2001, he initiated an extensive ongoing effort to document the extent of abuses of the campus walkways by vehicles of all kinds. For details, please see B. Parhami's Community Service page, his Math + Fun! page, or his Pet Peeve page.
